How to Reduce Garage Door Noise

Save

Noisy garage doors can be annoying and also a symptom of a bigger problem. Garage doors and electric openers can become loose, causing vibrations as well as operation issues. Regular maintenance to the garage door, track and electric opener will ensure smooth operation. Garage door systems that are falling apart or unsafe will need repair or replacement before damage to property or personal injury occurs.

Things You'll Need

  • Spray lubricant
  • Basic tool set
  • Ladder
  • Using a ladder and appropriate tools, go through each garage door track mounting fastener and tighten any loose nuts, bolts or screws. Loose mounting points on a garage door track will cause undesirable rattles and shakes when the door is moving along the tracks.

  • Lubricate the garage door track and rollers with spray lubricant to thwart squeaking noises at least twice a year. Lubricate chain and screw driven garage door openers when lubricating the track rollers.

  • Consider replacing older metal garage door rollers with nylon replacements. Nylon rollers do not require lubrication and will enable a smoother operation than older metal varieties.

  • Purchase and install a garage door vibration dampening kit according to the manufacturer's instructions. These kits isolate the vibration caused by the garage door opener.

Tips & Warnings

  • When purchasing a new garage door system, consider buying one with a torsion spring setup instead of one that features extension springs. Torsion-spring equipped garage doors allow equal weight distribution and reduce system friction.
  • Garage doors that have a wider track radius will operate smoother than garage tracks with a smaller bend radius.
