How to Measure for Curtain Panels
Whether you select ready-made curtain panels, custom order them or create your own, curtains personalize your home with the fabric, style and color you prefer. Measuring accurately assures a good fit. In addition to having the length and width turn out right for the window, curtain panel measurements affect the curtain's decorative statement. Choose a tailored, flat-panel curtain style for some rooms, and an informal or romantic gathered style for other areas of the home. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the width of the window from the outside of the molding--or any other decorative area that frames the window--on one side of the window to the outside of the molding on the other side.
-
2
Make a note of the width measurement and Increase the measurement by 1 1/2 to 3 times to add fullness to the curtain panels. For example, for a 60-inch (5-foot) wide window, plan on 7 1/2 to 15 feet for the width of the curtain panels, depending on how much gathering you want in the fabric.

3
Measure from the top of the curtain rod or drapery hardware to the top of the window sill, bottom of the window's frame, to the floor or to halfway between the floor and the bottom of the window's frame, depending on the length you want for the curtain panels.
-
4
Make a note of the length measurement. Subtract at least an inch for floor-length curtain panels so the fabric doesn't drag. Standard curtain panel lengths are 63, 84, 95, 108 and 120 inches.

Tips & Warnings
For a doorway, consider using two curtain panels to provide a split in the middle. This makes a doorway curtain easier to use when your hands are full.
Some suppliers will create custom curtain panels to suit windows that need different sizes than standard ones. Check with Internet retailers and shops that specialize in window coverings.
