How to Clean Chair Cushions

Michelle Donato

Nothing stays clean forever, especially the chair cushions we sit on. Whether in your kitchen, living room or dining room, we rely on them to withstand daily use while enhancing the look of our space. In order to ensure a long-lasting, comfortable fabric seat cushion, regular cleanings are necessary.

Clean your chair cushions to keep them looking like new.

Quality material can deteriorate over time if not properly cared for. If neglected, cushions can become discolored and take on odors. Ridding your chair cushions of dirt and stains only requires a few simple steps.

  1. Purchase an upholstery cleaner at your local grocery store. Upholstery cleaners are specially manufactured to treat dirt and food stains acquired on fabric materials. A mild soap or detergent can also be used.

  2. Remove the cushion from the chair and bring it to an open, ventilated area. Put on gloves, if desired.

  3. Apply the upholstery cleaner to the surface of the cushion. Allow the cleaning solution to sit for 5 to 10 minutes then work in with a soft brush or washcloth until you notice the cushion becoming cleaner. Rinse the cloth and wipe it several times to remove any residue of the cleaner.

  4. Rub the cushion with your hand or the brush while rinsing the cushion with water to loosen up any dirt, mold or stains.

  5. Repeat steps three and four until the desired level of cleanliness is achieved and no cleaning solution remains.

  6. Remove as much moisture as possible, but don’t rub or apply too much pressure to wet fabric. To speed up the drying process, set up a fan or place the cushion outside.
