How to Get Candle Wax Out of Wool Carpet

Candles add beauty, fragrance and a warm glow but can also create a mess.

A well-made wool carpet will look beautiful and last for years. Wool is a sensitive fiber and must be treated, cleaned and maintained carefully. Mistreatment of wool carpeting will result in ruining the carpet fibers and permanently altering the appearance of the carpet. Use supplies from home and extra care to remove spilled candle wax from your wool carpet. When you've finished the task, your carpet will be clean and stain-free once again.

Things You'll Need

• Butter knife
• Brown paper bag
• Scissors
• Clothing iron
• Baking soda
• Vacuum

Instructions

1. 

   A table knife scoops up hard wax without cutting the carpet fibers.

   Scrape up as much as you can of the hardened candle wax using a butter or table knife.

2. 

   A brown paper bag can be a wax-removal tool.

   Cut a brown paper grocery bag into pieces large enough to cover the candle-wax stain on your wool carpet.

3. Lay one piece of brown paper over the candle-wax stain.

4. 

   Heat from the iron softens the candle wax.

   Rub the brown paper with a clothing iron set on medium. Continue to do this as the wax transfers from the wool carpeting to the brown paper. Change to a new piece of paper and continue to iron until there's no further transfer of wax to paper.

5. Sprinkle baking soda on the remnants of the candle-wax stain. Allow it to sit on the stain for at least two hours. The baking soda will remove the greasy residue left by the candle wax.

6. 

   Remove your cleaning agent and the last traces of stain.

   Vacuum the baking soda from your carpet.

Tips & Warnings

• Comb wool carpet fibers with a wide-toothed comb to fill them out after they're clean.

• Wool fibers are very absorbent; blot up stains as quickly as possible after they occur.
