How to Convert Mobipocket Reader to Word or PDF

Save

Mobipocket Reader lets you read entire books on your computer or mobile device. Unfortunately, Mobipocket eBook files that use the .MOBI and .PRC file extensions can't be used in other eBook readers such as the Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader or Nook. Luckily, there is an eBook management program called Calibre that can help convert Mobipocket Reader files to Word or PDF formats for easy viewing in other eBook readers. Now you won't need to repurchase your old eBooks for a new eBook reader device.

Things You'll Need

  • Calibre
  • Mobipocket Reader file

Converting to PDF

  • Download and install Calibre onto your PC. (See Resources.) Once it has installed, start up Calibre by double-clicking on the program icon on the desktop of your computer. You can also start the program from the All Programs section of your Start menu.

  • Click the "Add Books" button at the top left-hand side of the screen. Browse to where your Mobipocket file is stored. Click the file name so that it is highlighted and click the "Open" button. The file will be added to the library section in the middle of the Calibre software.

  • Click the name of the Mobipocket book in the library section so it's highlighted. Click the "Convert E-Books" button. In the new window, click the drop-down menu at the top right-hand side of the screen and choose the PDF format. Press "OK" to start the conversion process. This may take a few minutes depending on the size of the original Mobipocket Reader file.

  • Click the arrow next to the "Save to Disk" button and choose "PDF" from the "Save Single Format to Disk" drop-down menu. Choose where you want to save the file and press "OK." You should now have a PDF version of your original Mobipocket eBook.

Converting to Word

  • Start up Calibre. Load your original Mobipocket file into the Calibre software using the "Add Books" button. Choose where the file is stored and click "Open."

  • Click the "Convert E-Books" button. Change the output format to "TXT" from the drop-down menu at the top right-hand side of the next screen. Click the "OK" button to convert your original file.

  • Click the arrow next to the "Save to Disk" button. Under "Save Single Format to Disk", choose "TXT." Pick a memorable location to save your new TXT file, such as the computer's desktop. Click "OK" when you're ready to save the file.

  • Open Microsoft Word. Open the converted TXT file by clicking "Open" from the File menu. Choose where you stored the TXT file and click the "Open" button. Click "Save As" from the File menu. Save the TXT file as a Word document. You have now converted the original Mobipocket eBook to the Word document file type.

Tips & Warnings

  • Alter the look for your eBook when it's a TXT file before you save it as a Word file if it contains any errors or formatting problems.
