How to Use DSL Modems on Standard Phone Lines

If you wish to use a DSL modem on a standard phone line in your home, you need to purchase a DSL modem kit. A DSL modem uses your standard phone line to bring Internet service into your home or office. You can use DSL modems on standard phone lines by organizing and setting up your equipment and subscribing to DSL service through your telephone service provider.

Things You'll Need

  • DSL modem kit
  • DSL service
  • Subscribe to DSL Internet service with your telephone service provider by calling the customer service phone number at the top of your phone bill, speaking with a customer service representative, asking the representative to sign you up for DSL Internet service, allowing her to add the service to the bill and then writing down the confirmation number for your order. A monthly service fee will be added to your phone bill.

  • Insert the DSL phone filters included with your DSL modem kit into each of the standard phone line jacks of your home or office. Insert your phone cords connected to telephones into the the jacks on the DSL phone filters. DSL phone filters funnel the voice portion of your standard phone line to your phones and the DSL portion of your line to your modems. One of the DSL phone filters will have two jacks: one for phone and one for DSL. Insert that filter into the wall phone jack nearest to where you want to set up your DSL modem.

  • Click the phone cord that comes with your DSL modem kit into the spot on the dual-jack phone filter labeled "DSL." Click the other end of the phone cord into the phone jack on the back of your DSL modem.

  • Plug the power cord for your DSL modem into a wall outlet. Plug the other end of the power cord into the back of your modem.

  • Watch the lights on your DSL modem come on one at a time as the modem powers up and connects to the Internet.

  • Take the Ethernet cord that comes with your DSL modem kit and plug one end of that cord into the Ethernet jack on the back of your modem. Plug the other end of this cord into the Ethernet jack on your computer.

  • Open a Web browser on your computer by double-clicking on the browser icon on your computer Desktop. You may now use your DSL modem to access the Internet.

  • Repeat Steps 1 through 7 to set up other DSL modems on other standard phone lines. DSL phone providers recommend that you only use one DSL modem per each standard phone line.
