Testing your download and upload speeds on the Internet is an important task to understanding your system's performance and troubleshooting problems. You can rule out your Internet connection being the cause of a problem if your speed is where it should be. When you perform a speed test, you will get a number in megabytes per second.

Instructions

1. Close all applications and programs. This will allow you to get a good reading of your computer's download and upload speeds.

2. Open a browser and go to the Speakeasy, Performance Toast or Speed Test websites.

3. Start the test that the site you choose in Step 2 offers. For example, the Speakeasy site asks you to pick a city nearest to you. The test starts as soon as you click on a city name.

4. View your results. Your download speed will be much faster than your upload speed.
