An example of windows with awnings

Awnings provide some degree of protection from rain and sun when house windows are open. A driving wind or beating afternoon sun can present a challenge to a home owner who would like to have a window open during warmer months. An awning is a simple solution to block some of these harsh conditions. A cheap wood awning can be made with inexpensive materials and tools. It may not be the choice for everyone, but it is a good option for those who are on a budget and want a simple sun and rain barrier. A wood awning can be made affordable by using inexpensive wood such as pine and plywood. The simple design of this awning will also cut down on materials costs.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the awning frame by placing two 1 x 2 x 24-inch pine boards parallel to each other approximately 48-inches apart. These are the frame ends. Place the two 1 x 2 x 48-inch pine boards between the frame ends to form a box. These are the frame sides. Fasten the frame together by driving finish nails through the sides into the ends with a hammer. Use two finish nails per joint.

    • 2

Apply a wood finish of your choice to the awning frame. Apply the same wood finish to the remaining 1 x 2 x 24-inch pine board. This is the awning support board. Allow the finish to dry before handling the awning frame. Refer to the finish instructions on the finish container for drying times.

    • 3

Place the 1/4 x 25 1/2 x 48-inch plywood panel on top of the awning frame. Fasten the panel to the frame using finish nails and a hammer. Space the nails evenly along the edges every 2 inches. Apply a wood finish of your choice to the plywood panel. Allow the finish to dry.

    • 4

Align two of the hinges on one 48-inch side of the frame approximately 2 inches in from each end. Fasten the hinges to the frame using a screwdriver and the provided screws. The screws will come with the hinges in the exact amount you need so be careful not to lose any.

    • 5

Align the third hinge on the back side of the awning frame in the center on the side opposite the other two hinges. Fasten the hinge in place using a screwdriver and provided screws. This will be for the 1 x 2 x 24-inch awning support board. The support board will swing down and lean against the window sill to hold the awning up. Fasten the support board to the other half of the hinge.

    • 6

Place the awning on the exterior of the window. Hold it in place with the 48-inch side with the hinges facing up. Fasten the hinges to the top window casing using a screwdriver and provided screws. Swing the support board down and rest it against the exterior part of the window sill. This will hold the awning open.
