Obtain a NYS security license.

Every state has their own requirements that a person must fulfill before they are awarded a security license, and New York State is no different. The Division of Criminal Justice Services Office of Public Safety is responsible for overseeing security training in NYS and the New York State Department of State regulates the registration of security guards. The job of a security guard may include protecting citizens or property from damage, patrolling the streets, or reporting unlawful activity.

Instructions

    • 1

Attend a training school that is approved by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services. Prices will range from $25-$125. Complete the "8-Hour Pre-assignment Course for Security Guards."

    • 2

Take and pass the 25-question written exam with a score of 75 or higher. When you pass the test you will be awarded a certificate that proves you passed.

    • 3

Fill out a security guard licensing application. You can find the application on the NYS Department of State website (see References).

    • 4

Get fingerprinted. Complete any other requirements listed on the New York Department of State website.

    • 5

Submit your application with your certificate of proof. You will receive your license in the mail in a few weeks.
