How to Get a Work Permit for Kids
Worker permits are not required by the federal government, but many states require them for under-aged workers. Each state that requires a permit has its own form that needs to be filled out. The age cut off is typically 15 and under for a permit in most jobs, however some dangerous positions might require a permit up to the age of 17. The states that issue permits will retain a copy for their files in case there are any legal issues that arise from the employment.

1
Check with your state to see if a work permit is required for your child. Call the Department of Labor in your state to find out if one is needed. Employers generally will know if a work permit is required in the state, too. If a job is already lined up, the employer should be able to tell you if one is needed.

2
Ask the state Department of Labor where you can obtain the certificate. Generally this will be at a local Department of Social Services office. You might also find a copy on the department website that you can print. North Carolina has a print off form. Other states have different ways of obtaining a certificate. For example, Virginia offers copies in public high schools.

Fill out required information and have the employers fill out their portion. Bring proof of identity. In most cases two forms of ID will be needed, as well as proof of age such as a birth certificate.

4
Take the required forms back to the location you received them such as the school or Department of Labor or Social Services. You will be given a copy of the certificate to give to the employer as well as one for yourself.
