How to Get Mewtwo in Pokémon Games

How to Get Mewtwo in Pokémon Games thumbnail
Mewtwo is a powerful Pokémon that can be captured in a few Nintendo games.

Mewtwo is a powerful, one-of-a-kind Psychic Pokémon. It debuted in "Pokémon: The First Movie" in 1999 and has appeared in several games, most often as a boss or cameo. Mewtwo can be captured in Pokémons Red, Blue and Yellow (Game Boy), as well as FireRed and LeafGreen (Game Boy Advance). There is only one Mewtwo in each game, so if you miss your chance to capture it, you will not get a second try.

Instructions

    • 1

Defeat Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket, on the 11th floor of the Silph Co. headquarters in Saffron City. The hostage, the president of Silph Co., will give you the Master Ball as your reward for freeing him.

    • 2

Win all of your gym badges, then defeat the Elite Four located outside Viridian City.

    • 3

Travel to the cave outside Cerulean City. You must use Surf to get there. The guardian to the cave will only let you enter if you have defeated the Elite Four.

    • 4

Travel through the maze inside the cave. When you reach Mewtwo at the end, battle it, but instead of trying to defeat it by reducing its hit points, use your Master Ball, which is a one-hit ball capable of capturing any Pokémon.

Tips & Warnings

  • The technique for capturing Mewtwo is the same in the older games (Red, Blue and Yellow) as the newer games (LeafGreen, FireRed), though the appearance and population of the secret cave outside Cerulean City is different.

  • There are many strong, wild Pokémon in the cave maze, but you are not required to battle them to reach the end of the maze, where Mewtwo is located.

  • Regular Poké Balls will not capture Mewtwo, regardless of how low its hit points are. According to IGN, Ultra Balls can be used, but this is risky; the only sure way to capture Mewtwo is with a Master Ball.
