How to Add a Shower Diverter Tub Spout

Installing a shower diverter

Installing a shower diverter tub spout is a simple do-it-yourself task that requires little skill. You'll know your diverter needs replacing when you pull up the trip lever and water continues to flow from the tub spout. Hardware stores carry a universal tub spout replacement.

Things You'll Need

• Tongue-and-groove pliers
• Plumber's tape

Instructions

1. Unscrew the tub spout from the wall. There may be a nut or a screw on the underside of the spout that needs to be loosened before the spout can be removed. Also, if you can't turn the spout by hand, use a pair of tongue-and-groove pliers for a better grip.

2. Clean any old plumber's tape off the threads of the pipe.

3. Wrap a new piece of plumber's tape around the threading of the pipe.

4. Screw the new tub spout onto the pipe.

5. Turn on your shower and test the new diverter valve.
