How to Waterproof Material

Waterproofing your favorite coat will keep you dry when the rain starts to fall.

If you are an avid outdoor enthusiast, you already realize the value of having waterproof clothing when you go adventuring. Like the Boy Scouts say, "Be prepared." It's a motto that can be used in many instances, and waterproofing your clothes before heading out into the elements is definitely one of them. What's more, the process is extremely straightforward and you can probably waterproof almost any item of protective clothing.

Things You'll Need

• Silicone-based waterproofing product
• Clothing to be waterproofed

Instructions

1. Purchase a silicone-based waterproofing product. They are sold at most camping stores and shoe stores, and sometimes at grocery store supercenters. There are a variety of different types; make sure the type you get is suitable for clothing.

2. Make sure that the items you are waterproofing are clean. Excess dirt or oils can cause the waterproofing agent to not work as well.

3. Apply the waterproofing product to the clothing you would like to make water-resistant. Follow the directions on the products' container. Apply it evenly and thoroughly.

4. Allow the item or items to dry in a well-ventilated area for the amount of time specified on the packaging.

Tips & Warnings

• You will have a hard time waterproofing any type of material that is too open, like a sweater. You will have more success with materials like canvas and wool.
