Microsoft Word Watermark Tutorial

Add text or picture watermarks to your Microsoft Word documents to protect against plagiarism and unauthorized distribution, enhance appearance and design, or indicate the type of document you're working with.

Instructions

  1. Text Watermark (Word 2003)

      Open the Microsoft Word document to which you want to add a watermark.

      Click "Format," then "Background." Select "Printed Watermark."

      Select "Text Watermark" in the resulting action window. Type text in the "Text" field, or choose preset text from the drop-down menu.

      Select the watermark's font style, size, and color from the appropriate drop-down menus. Check the "Semitransparent" box for a translucent watermark. Uncheck the box for a solid watermark.

      Choose the direction of the watermark by selecting either "Diagonal" or "Horizontal." Click "OK." The watermark will appear centered on each page of your document.

    Picture Watermark (Word 2003)

      Open the Microsoft Word document to which you want to add a watermark.

      Click "Format," then "Background." Select "Printed Watermark."

      Select "Picture Watermark" in the resulting action window. Click "Select Picture." Search your computer's hard drive for the image you want to use. Double-click the image file to insert.

      Select the size of the picture watermark by choosing a percentage from the "Scale" drop-down menu. Select "Auto" for the image to automatically adjust to the size and layout of the document.

      Check the "Washout" box for a semitransparent image. Uncheck the box for the image to appear in grayscale. Click "OK." The image will now appear centered on each page of your document.

      Select a default watermark from the options shown, or click "Custom Watermark."

      Select "Text Watermark." Type custom text in the "Text" field. Choose the watermark's language, color, font and size using the appropriate drop-down menus.

Tips & Warnings

  • When adding a picture watermark, note that images with higher resolution and greater contrast translate better into grayscale and translucence.
