How to Mod a PS2 Slimline
The popularity of the PlayStation 2 Slim (PS2 Slim) has led many owners to modify it physically to alter the way it works, although this voids the Sony warranty. You can modify the sensors on the PS2 Slim to play backup games by swapping discs in the disc drive. You only need a few common household items and about 20 minutes to do the modification, since you will not have to disassemble the PS2 Slim. You can also modify the modification at any time.

- Bath towel
- Notebook paper
- Pencil
- Cellophane tape
- Two plastic drinking straws
- Scissors

Put a bath towel on a table. Put the PS2 Slim on the bath towel.

Tear off a piece of notebook paper about the size of your little fingernail. Roll it up into a ball.

Put the ball of paper into the hole in the extreme right-front edge on the top of the PS2 Slim. Push the ball of paper into the hole with the eraser end of the pencil. Put a piece of cellophane tape over the hole.

Measure three inches from an end of one of the plastic drinking straws. Cut the plastic drinking straw at the three-inch mark with the scissors. Discard the rest of the plastic drinking straw.

Flatten the cut piece of the plastic drinking straw with your fingers. Raise the lid of the PS2 Slime to its fully opened position.

Locate the plastic tab sticking up vertically at the back-center end inside of the PS2 Slim next to the square metal bracket. Stick the flattened end of the piece of the plastic drinking straw beneath the plastic rod.

Wedge the cut piece of the plastic drinking straw beneath the plastic rod until you hear a clicking sound. Tape the plastic drinking straw to the hole by encircling it with a piece of cellophane tape.

Roll another fingernail-sized ball of paper. Place the paper ball into the depression between the square metal bracket and the left side of the plastic tab.

Wedge the ball of paper into the depression using the eraser end of the pencil. Put a piece of cellophane tape over the ball of paper.

Cut a three-inch length off the other plastic drinking straw. Flatten one end using your fingers. Discard the rest of the plastic drinking straw.

Stick the flattened end of the plastic drinking straw into the hole inside of the PS2 Slim where the upper lid meets the inside--the hole is to the left of the square metal bracket at the upper-middle edge, across from the PS2 Slim logo on the top of the lid.

Push the flattened end down and toward the left inside of the hole until you hear the sound of the laser module popping up from the laser assembly.

Tape the plastic drinking straw to the hole by encircling it with a piece of cellophane tape.

Tips & Warnings
Blow off the inside of the PS2 Slim regularly with compressed air since the mod requires you to leave the lid open.
Remove all modifications before taking the PS2 Slim in for a repair, as Sony considers such modifications a violation of the warranty.
