How to Disassemble a 1969 Mustang

Disassembly is the first step in any automotive restoration. Total disassembly is important because each part must be individually inspected to determine whether it can be reused or must be replaced. Disassembly also allows the restorer to completely clean the car and properly reassemble it in such a way as to minimize accidental damage. By 1969, Ford’s Mustang was only four years old and the 1969 Mustang used many of the same components as the first Mustang. The Mustang continued to rely on a simple assembly process, which makes disassembly fairly straightforward.

  • Wrench
  • Utility knife
  • Socket wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Jack
  • Raise the hood and remove the four bolts which secure the back of the hood to the two hood hinges with a wrench. Lift the hood off of the Mustang with the help of an assistant.

  • Remove the front bumper by removing the retaining bolts from underneath the bumper with a wrench and by pulling the bumper off its support brackets.

  • Remove the front valance panel. The valance panel is the metal panel below the front bumper. Reach underneath the valance and unplug the wiring for the turn-signal indicators from the car’s main wiring harness. Remove the bolts which hold the valance panel in place with a wrench, then lower the panel from the car.

  • Remove the bolts which secure the fenders to the car with a wrench, then lift the fenders off of the car. Note that each fender has a single bolt located underneath the fender, just behind the front tire.

  • Remove the bolts which secure each door hinge to the car’s frame with a wrench, then lift the doors off of the body. Note that the doors are very heavy and may require the help of an assistant.

  • Open the trunk lid and remove the four bolts which secure the back of the trunk lid to the two trunk hinges with a wrench, then lift the trunk lid off of the car.

  • Remove the bolts which hold the rear bumper in place with a wrench and pull the bumper off of the car. The bumper’s four retaining bolts must be accessed from inside the trunk.

  • Cut through the weather-stripping which surrounds both the front and rear windshields with a utility knife. The weather-stripping must be cut until the edges of the windshield are exposed. Gently press the windshield from the interior of the Mustang until the windshield is free, then lift the windshield away from the car.

  • Remove the four retaining nuts which secure each front seat to the Mustang’s frame with a socket wrench, then lift the front seats out of the car. Access the retaining nuts from underneath the car.

  • Press the bottom half of the back seat towards the back of the car while simultaneously lifting upward on the seat to disconnect it, then remove the two bolts which secure the upper half of the back seat in place with a wrench. Pick the upper half of the seat up until it is free.

  • Remove the bezel which surrounds the base of the gear-shift lever with a Phillips screwdriver, then pull the carpeting out of the car, followed by the sound deadener underneath the carpet.

  • Remove the screws which secure the instrument panel in place with a screwdriver, then pull the instrument panel out of the dashboard until the wires which connect to the back of the panel can be accessed. Remove the speedometer cable from the back of the speedometer with a wrench, then pull each wire off the back of the instrument panel to free it.

  • Disconnect the battery cables with a wrench, followed by the engine’s wiring.

  • Disconnect the transmission from the back of the engine block with a wrench. Disconnect the driveshaft from the back of the transmission and support the weight of the transmission with a jack. Disconnect the transmission’s cross-member with a wrench, then lower the transmission away from the Mustang with the jack.

  • Disconnect the engine block from both engine mounts, then lift the engine out of the engine compartment with a hoist. A single engine mount is located on each side of the engine.
