How to Make the Horizon in Photoshop
Some artists enjoy capturing a view of the horizon from behind the lens of a camera, while others set up an easel and paint the sun rising or setting in the distance. If you enjoy brilliant sunsets or far away landscapes, you can create your own artwork version digitally using Photoshop. This is a graphics program available as part of the Adobe Creative Suite that comes with a variety of tools, filters and colors you can use to create your own version of the horizon, tailored to the time of year, colors of the sky or location throughout the world.

1
Create a new file by opening Photoshop and clicking "File," then "New." When the "New" dialog box opens, name the file "MyHorizon" and enter your preferred dimensions by typing a number into the "Width" and "Height" boxes, then select "Inches" from the size drop-down menus. Pull down the "Mode" menu and select "RGB Color," then click the "White" option under the "Contents" section and click the "OK" button.
-
2
Click the "Shape" tool on the "Tools" palette on the left side of the screen. This tool may look like a hollow rectangle, hollow circle, line or solid star; they all share the same icon space. Right-click the tool you see and choose the "Rectangle Tool." Notice a new toolbar at the top of the screen.

3
Pull down the "Layer Style" menu and select one of the preset horizon designs, such as a yellow and orange skyline, blue and white skyline or a blend of brown, white and blue, which looks like an image of the ground and sky together.
-
4
Position your cursor at the very top of the "MyHorizon" box and draw a rectangle to cover up the entire white space of the box. The box fills with the horizon pattern.
-
5
Click the "New Layer" icon, which looks like a bent sticky note, on the bottom of the "Layers" palette on the right side of the screen. A new Layer 1 appears on the palette.
-
6
Click the "Star" tool on the "Shape" toolbar at the top of the screen, then pull down the "Layer Style" menu next to it and choose the no layer style option, which looks like a white box with a red line through it.
-
7
Double-click the top left colored square in the "Color Picker" on the "Tools" palette, then choose a color for your star, such as white or yellow. Click "OK." Drag your cursor over the top part of the horizon to add stars, which will automatically fill in with your choice of color.
