How to Remove a Lower Vinyl Window Panel

Save

Vinyl replacement windows add beauty to your home and can be a snap to clean. You may find, however, that you need to remove the lower window panel to make adjustments to the window springs and shoes. The top of the lower window panel, or sash, usually unlocks so that you can pull the top of the sash inside the room to clean both sides of the window. You can also remove the sash completely by unsnapping the bottom of the sash from its holders.

Things You'll Need

  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Dowel
  • Press the lower window sash locks inward to unlock the window and raise the lower sash five inches from the bottom of the window sill.

  • Hold the window sash locks inward and pull out on the top of the window sash. You may need to bend the frame liner slightly to pull the top of the sash out. The liner is the flexible vinyl portion on the inside of the window frame. If necessary, use a screwdriver or dowel to aid in prying the top of the window sash out of the window frame.

  • Position the lower window sash so that it is perpendicular to the floor. Lift up one corner of the lower part of the window sash to release it from the retaining shoe. Lift the other corner to release it from the retaining shoe and pull the lower window sash out of the window.
