How to Engrave a Trophy and Plaque

Engraving trophies and plaques is a great way to customize awards for anyone. Both of these items come with a metal plate that is simple to engrave using a hand-held tool. Engraving tools are inexpensive ($30 to $120) and easy to find online or in a hardware store. Custom engraving is costly and can take months for the order to process.       Draw the letters or design to be engraved directly onto the metal plate that comes with the plaque or trophy. A soft-lead pencil leaves an impression on the metal that is easy to follow. Pencil also erases easily, making changes simpler.

      Clamp the plaque or trophy to a table. Make sure you can reach it easily and the clamps don't interfere with the design.

      Plug in the engraving tool and put on goggles. Metal dust can be harmful.

      Trace the design with the engraving tool.
