How to Reinstall Apple iTunes

Macintosh users organize their music files with Apple iTunes, a music library management program included in all versions of the Mac OS X operating system. As a last resort, you may need to completely uninstall and reinstall Apple iTunes in order to solve problems with the application. Uninstalling Apple iTunes involves removing the application as well as invisible helper and preference files.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Web browser and go to the iTunes download page (see Resources). Click on the large “Free Download” button on the left side of the window.

    • 2

Indicate whether you want to receive iTunes emails and Apple emails. If you do, enter your email address in the text box. Click the blue “Download Now” button.

    • 3

Double-click on “iTunesX.dmg” to mount it to your Desktop. The disk image will open to reveal a “Read Before You Install iTunes” document and the “iTunes.mpkg” installer application.

    • 4

Double-click on the document to read information before installing, if desired.

    • 5

Double-click “iTunes.mpkg” to start the installer.

    • 6

Follow the instructions in the installer window. When you see the message that the installation is complete, press the “Exit” button. You can access iTunes in the “Applications” folder.
