How to Change the Firefox Search Bar

Save

Firefox is a free Web browser from Mozilla that allows you to customize your browser with add-ons. The search bar in your Firefox browser lets you search the Web without having to open another browser window. You can choose which search engine is used within the search bar. According to the Mozilla website, as of May 2010, the Firefox Search bar comes pre-loaded with Google, Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, Answers.com, and Creative Commons search. You can add another search engine by downloading an add-on for the search engine.

Select a Search Engine

  • Open Firefox by clicking on the Firefox icon on your desktop. If you do not have the Firefox icon on your desktop, your Start menu (Windows) or dock (Mac) may have the icon listed if you frequently use Firefox as your web browser.

  • Click on the search engine symbol directly to the left of the search bar. A drop-down list of search engines will appear.

  • Click on the search engine name you would like to use. This will display the selected search engine icon next to the search bar. For instance, the Google search engine icon will show a "G" next to the search bar.

  • Type a word or phrase into the search bar and press "Enter" to test that the new search engine is used for the search. Your browser will show a list of search results with your selected search engine.

Add a New Search Engine

  • Open Firefox and go to the Firefox Add-ons page (see Resources).

  • Select "Search Tools" from the drop-down menu in the top right corner next to the search field. The browser will automatically fill in the search term "search Add-ons" in the search field.

  • Press "Enter" to search for add-ons. A list of available search engine add-ons will appear.

  • Select the search engine you would like to add to your browser by clicking "Add to Firefox." A pop-up window will appear, asking you to verify that you would like to download this search engine to your search bar. Click "Add" to accept.

  • Go to your browser's search bar and click on the search engine icon to the left of the search bar. Your new search engine will be noted at the bottom of your list of search engines.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are unable to find your Firefox icon, try searching your computer for Firefox to bring up the program file.
