How to Disable the DHCP Client Service

The DHCP client service in Windows allows your computer to function on the Internet with a dynamic IP address. This service requests that an IP be assigned to your computer so you can maintain a connection to your service provider's router. When you use a static IP, however, the DHCP client service becomes superfluous and simply becomes another service in the way of your computer. Disabling it gives you a bit more free memory.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to your Start menu and click on "Control Panel."

    • 2

Click on "Administrative Tools" and then click on "Services."

    • 3

Scroll down the list until you reach "DHCP Client Service" and right-click it.

    • 4

Click "Properties" and select "Disabled" under "Startup type."

    • 5

Click the "Stop" button and then click "OK."

    • 6

Close the "Services" window and the Control Panel. Your DHCP client service no longer runs on your computer and won't start up automatically with Windows anymore until you configure it to do so again.
