How to Print a B&W Image Using Photoshop

Though Adobe Photoshop offers millions of color possibilities, sometimes a simple black-and-white photo still makes the best impression. Whether you want to create the perfect professional headshot or just bring colorless simplicity to a landscape, Photoshop will allow you to convert and print any image in high-quality black and white. Just choose the right photo and let Photoshop assist you through the rest.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your image in Photoshop. Simply drag the image file directly onto the Photoshop icon. Your image will open in its own document.

    • 2

Convert your photo to black and white. Click "Image" on the menu bar and select "Mode" from the drop-down menu. When the next drop-down appears, select "Grayscale." This will drain the color from your image.

    • 3

Click "Layer" on the menu bar and select "Duplicate Layer" from the menu bar. This will create a duplicate of your image, directly on top of the original.

    • 4

Locate your "Layers" panel and select your second layer, the copy of your original image. If you cannot see your "Layers" panel, click "Window" on the menu bar and select "Layers" from the drop-down menu.

    • 5

Change your layer setting from "Normal" to "Overlay." Just click the bubble that reads "Normal," directly beneath the "Layers" heading, and choose the "Overlay" option from the list that appears.

    • 6

Change the opacity of the layer to 65 percent. The "Opacity" option appears directly to the right of the layer method. To lower the percent from 100 to 65, click the number in the opacity box and drag the slider to the left until you see "65." You now have a much higher-quality black-and-white photo, with added contrast and shadows, achieved by a technique recommended by Mac World.

    • 7

Click "File" on the menu bar and select "Print" from the drop-down menu.

    • 8

Turn on your printer and make sure that you have paper loaded in the tray. Use glossy paper for higher-quality prints, or choose any custom photo paper that meets your needs.

    • 9

Click the "Print" button in the lower-right corner of your Photoshop "Print" window.
