How to Block Junk in Hotmail

How to Block Junk in Hotmail thumbnail
Hotmail has three levels to filter your junk email.

Most email programs and browser-based email services offer a spam or junk mail folder where unwanted email can be routed instead of your inbox. You can later review these emails to determine whether they are actually junk mail. Hotmail users can set levels of protection against junk mail and customize its handling.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Web browser and navigate to the Hotmail homepage.

    • 2

Log in to your Hotmail account.

    • 3

Click "Options" at the top of the page.

    • 4

Click "More Options" from the drop-down menu that appears.

    • 5

Click "Filters and reporting" under "Junk e-mail."

    • 6

Tell Hotmail what filter level to set. Choose "Low" (obvious junk mail), "Standard" (most junk mail) or "Exclusive" (everything sent to junk mail except email from contacts).

    • 7

Set up how you want Hotmail to handle junk mail. Choose to allow junk email to sit in the "Junk" folder for 10 days and be deleted automatically, or choose to delete it immediately.

    • 8

Choose whether you want to report junk mail to Microsoft when you receive it.

    • 9

Click "Save" when finished setting up the junk mail filter.
