How to Set Up an SMC Networks Wireless Cardbus Adapter

While most laptops come already equipped with wireless networking capabilities, there are a few that do not have that brand of Internet connectivity available. Because laptops are not inherently upgradeable, most users prefer to purchase and install a wireless cardbus adapter, which can be connected through any available PCMCIA port on the laptop. SMC Networks is a major provider of these types of adapters, and while it can be a little confusing trying to set them up from the get-go, it's not as difficult as it seems.

Things You'll Need

• Computer with free PCMCIA port
• SMC Wireless Cardbus Adapter install disc

Instructions

1. Insert the SMC Networks Wireless Cardbus Adapter into your computer's PCMCIA slot, then turn on the computer and wait for your operating system to load.

2. Insert the installation disc into the computer's CD drive.

3. Click the "Install" button in the dialog box that pops up on your screen. This will launch the automated setup process that will install the needed drivers for your wireless adapter onto the computer. Follow the onscreen instructions to begin the automated installation.

4. Restart the computer. Once your operating system has finished loading, your new wireless adapter will be ready for use.
