How to Study to Become a Professional Musician in London, UK thumbnail
Professional musicians spend years studying.

Many people want to be professional musicians. Not many have the talent and dedication to make it happen. It takes years of study and practice to get to the point where people will pay you to play your instrument. If you think you have what it takes, there are many schools and colleges in London that can help you reach your goal.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the instrument you want to play. Ideally, it should be one that you like and have an aptitude for. Many musicians start playing one instrument then switch to another.

    • 2

Take lessons. If you're still in school, ask about free lessons during or after school. Depending on your instrument, you may want to join the school orchestra or a band.

    • 3

Find a private tutor. In most cases, school lessons won't be enough to get you to a professional level. If you don't know anyone who teaches your chosen instrument, try the Incorporated Society of Musicians. All of their members adhere to a code of conduct. They can put you in touch with a good teacher in your area.

    • 4

Listen to a lot of live music. Whether you go to small gigs or huge concerts, it helps to hear other people play your chosen instrument. It will also give you an idea of where you can go with your music career.

    • 5

Audition for a specialist music school. There are many good ones in London including the Royal College of Music, Trinity College of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and the London Centre for Contemporary Music. Graduates of these institutions go on to become professional musicians and music teachers.
