How to Defoam Detergent

Automatic dishwashers are a modern convenience that people tend to take for granted---until something goes wrong. If that "something" involves an overflowing dishwasher full of sudsy foam, the solution is right there in your kitchen pantry.

Things You'll Need

• 1 cup salt
• Ice cubes
• Towels

Instructions

1. Sprinkle a cup of salt liberally across the bottom of the dishwasher.

2. Empty two trays of ice cubes into the bottom of the dishwasher. This will help lower the temperature in the dishwasher, which will reduce the suds.

3. Turn the timer on the dishwasher slowly until you hear the motor stop. When the motor starts again, the drain cycle begins.

4. Let the dishwasher finish the drain cycle, then use towels to soak up any remaining suds.

Tips & Warnings

• You can use salt for any type of defoaming. If you have too much foam in the sink, simply toss a handful of salt into the basin and stir with a spoon.

• If your washing machine is overflowing, pour salt straight from the container to stanch some of those suds before they get out of control.
