How to Lay Landscape Rock
Landscaping rocks can look awkward if they are not placed in the yard correctly. The rocks must first be placed in an area that looks natural. They should be partially buried so they look natural. There are several different ways to decorate with landscaping rocks in a lawn or garden, depending on the kind of rocks used. Does this Spark an idea?

Gravel Landscaping

Remove any weeds and grass from the area where you intend to place the rocks.

Spray the entire area with a weed killer.

Smooth the dirt with a rake to make the area even.

Spread three to four inches of gravel or small rocks over the area. Make sure the gravel is at least three inches above the soil line. If there are several inches of gravel, the weeds and grass will have a harder time growing back because they will not receive enough sunlight to grow.

Decide where you want the boulders to go. Use the dolly to transport the rocks to that area of the yard. Do not attempt to pick up the rocks by hand or you could seriously damage your back.

Dig out a six- to eight-inch deep hole in the ground as big as the bottom of the rock.

Place the rock inside the hole.

Use some of the remaining dirt to pack around the bottom of the rock. Over the next few weeks the grass will grow on the exposed dirt, creating the illusion that the rock has been in that spot for years.

Dispose of the remaining dirt in a nearby garden bed.
Stepping Stones

Lay the stones over the lawn where you want the path to be. Measure the height of the stones.

Dig holes in the ground as deep as the stones are high. Make the holes are even and as large as the stepping stones.

Spread half an inch of sand in the bottom of the holes. Make sure the holes are fairly level.

Soak the holes with a garden hose for five to 10 minutes.

Place the stones in the holes and step on them. This helps the stones to settle.
Rock Garden

Collect several different sizes and colors of rock.

Dig out the area where you want the rock garden to go.

Spread a layer of weed killer over the entire bed.

Arrange the rocks inside the garden in any style you like. Place the largest rocks in the back, and gradually work toward smaller rocks in the front.

Make sure the base rocks are spread two to three inches above the soil level to prevent weeds from growing.
