1. Meet the minimum requirements for employment. Employees of the U.S. Post Office must be 18 years of age or 16 with a high school diploma. They must also be a citizen of the United States or its territories or hold a valid green card. Prospective employees must be willing to submit to a background test and drug screening tests.

2. Visit the USPS website in the references section below to search for job openings in your area. If you do not already have one, set up a valid email account before applying to receive updates from the postal service website.

3. Apply for an opening in your area by selecting it from the job opening search. Select "Apply for this position" under the jobs title you want and fill out the eCareer application that pops up on your screen.

4. Take an entrance exam. Passing the entrance exam is required for all positions other than certain administrative positions and will test your memory and basic competency. The date and location where you are to take your exam will be provided for you after you apply with the eCareer application.

5. Wait to see if you secure an interview. Successful completion of the exam does not guarantee you a position, but a high score combined with a satisfactory work history and clean drug testing and criminal background reports will greatly increase your chances. Your interview will help the post office determine if your character and skill set is a match for their needs. If the post office decides you are an ideal candidate for the position after interviewing you, they will contact you about hiring.
