How to Figure Out How Much Each Roommate Owes

Figuring out how much rent each roommate owes in a given month can lead to arguments, but really is not a difficult process. Most roommates divide the rent and utility bill up equally. Other times, a roommate with a smaller room is allowed to pay less than the roommates with larger bedrooms. The amount less she is paying should be factored in when calculating the total amount that each person owes when including utilities. In general, splitting utilities is the best idea to avoid conflicts.

Instructions

    • 1

Divide the total rent by the number of occupants. For example, if there are three roommates and rent is $2100 a month, each roommate owes $700.

    • 2

Divide the total utility bill by the number of roommates. For example, if the total utility bill for the month is $450 for three people, then each person would owe $150 for utilities.

    • 3

Add the amount owed for rent to the amount owed for utilities. Using the above examples, each roommate would owe $850 that month if they were doing an even split.

    • 4

Factor in any agreements that have been pre-arranged between the roommates. For example, if one roommate was allowed to pay $100 less per month because of a smaller room, he would owe $750 and the other two roommates would each owe $900.
