Running a Game on an External Hard Drive

Running a Game on an External Hard Drive thumbnail
Install games on an external hard drive.

Video games often take up a large amount of hard drive space. Due to this there often isn't enough storage space on a built-in hard drive. If this happens, it is possible to install and run a game off of an external hard drive. Although the game is installed on the external hard drive you cannot take the game with you to other computers, simply because there are files installed on the computer registry that cannot be moved with the hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the external hard drive to the computer. Typically this is through the aid of a USB data cable. Power on the hard drive and the computer states it has detected a new removable device.

    • 2

Insert the video game installation disc. Momentarily the computer loads the video game installation wizard.

    • 3

Accept the license agreement and type in the product key code (if required, it is usually found on the video game case). Select either the "Standard" installation or "Complete" installation. The standard installation requires the video game CD to be in the disc drive while running the game while a complete installation does not.

    • 4

Click "Browse" for the installation location. From the browse window that appears select the external hard drive and click "OK."

    • 5

Choose "Next" for the installation name, then click "Install" to install the video game.

    • 6

Launch the video game by double-clicking the desktop icon or by choosing "Start," "All Programs" and then clicking the video game tab. The video game loads, running off of the connected external hard drive. You need to keep the hard drive connected at all times. If at any time the hard drive becomes disconnected the game is going to crash or freeze.
