Determine what type of power washer is needed for your project. In addition to different levels of pressure, power washer choices also include hot or cold water and gas or electric power. The rule of thumb is to use electric when possible to avoid gas fumes, cold water for most dirt or mildew cleaning jobs, and the highest-pressure cleaning units you can afford.

Locate a rental facility that has power washers. Most major home improvement centers have tool rental divisions, but you should call ahead to determine which locations have power washers available. For larger jobs, you may want to contact standalone equipment rental companies because these companies will stock commercial-level pressure washers with higher-pressure cleaning units. When you speak to each store, be sure to ask if they accept reservations for rentals, what their daily vs. hourly rates are for the type of pressure washer you are interested in renting, and what they require for rental. If you have never used a pressure washer before, you should also ask if they will provide equipment safety and use training. Compare rental costs and value add-ons to determine the best rental service.

Reserve the power washer if necessary. Equipment rental companies may require you to reserve your rental in and provide a credit or debit card number to hold it. If renting in advance, make sure you ask about the cancellation policy. If renting from one of the larger home improvement stores, renting is generally on a first-come, first-served basis, so you should arrive at the location early the morning of the day you want to complete your project. Alternatively, you can arrive late the evening before if you are willing to pay a full day rental fee. Bring your driver's license and credit or debit card for payment at the time of pickup. Final rental fees will be charged to your credit or debit card when you return the rental.
