The proper release is an essential part of a good golf swing.

There are a lot of factors that go in to a golf swing that you must take into account when attempting to hit the ball. One of the more difficult tasks to perfect in a golf swing is the timing and releasing of the wrists. The wrist release is a determining factor in both the power and accuracy of a shot and every golfer must understand exactly what to do in order to properly release the wrists in the golf swing.

During the proper golf swing, power is stored in the backswing and is released through the hands and wrists during the downswing. It is important for every golfer to keep this power stored until the last second before releasing in order to maximize both power and accuracy.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep your weight on the right side of your body (for a right-handed golfer) throughout the entire backswing. This means that when you are at the top of your backswing, your weight will be on your right side and ready to shift to the left.

    • 2

Shift your weight to your left foot as the downswing begins. Your body will start to unwind and generate the power that you need in the golf swing.

Keep your wrists locked at the beginning of the downswing.

Keep your wrists in a locked position during the beginning of the downswing. This is called a "wrist lag" because as the rest of your body is releasing, your wrists remained cocked and ready to produce power.

    • 4

Release your wrists right before the club makes contact with the ball. The longer the wrists remain cocked, the more power is produced. Unfortunately, the release of the wrists is all about timing and requires a lot of practice.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice the swing over and over. Golf is not an easy game and the only way to improve is to practice. Trying to generate power through the wrist release will cause many inaccurate shots as you work on the timing.

  • Don't give up if you don't see results right away. Timing the release of the club and wrists is the hardest task to do in golf.

  • Hold your wrist position until the very last second to maximize power
