How to Write a Cover Letter for an Essay Submission
Essays are often used as criteria for a scholarship or for being accepted into a certain program, including college, training or internship programs. Essays are also used for contests. The structure of your essay will largely depend upon the requirements of the scholarship or program. After you have perfected your essay, you will need to write a cover letter to introduce your essay. The cover letter can be more simple and straightforward than the essay, but you'll still want to stand out from the crowd.

1
Type your name and contact information at the top of your cover letter. You want to make it easy for the recipients to get back in touch with you if you're essay was chosen.
-
2
Type a professional and courteous greeting. Use a specific person's name or that of the group you're sending the cover letter and essay to, such as "Dear Mr. Johnson" or "Dear Scholarship Committee."
-
-
3
State your objective for writing the essay in the first paragraph. You want to make it clear that you're submitting an essay, but you also want to say something personal that will catch the attention of readers, such as "I'm submitting this essay as part of the application process to be accepted into the Duke University School of Nursing. Once I become a nurse, I plan to work with women and children who are victims of domestic violence."
-
4
Explain a little more about yourself and the contents of your essay in the second paragraph. Again, this paragraph should be brief but interesting. Pull a few key concepts from your essay and mention them here. The goal of your cover letter is to get your essay read.
-
5
Thank the recipients for taking time to read your essay and for considering you for the scholarship, program or as an essay contest winner in the third and final paragraph. Let them know that you look forward to hearing from them.
-
6
End your cover letter with a professional closing, such as "Sincerely" or "Best Regards." Type your name a few lines after your closing. When you print your cover letter, you'll sign your name in the space between the closing and your typed name. This helps to add a personal touch to your essay submission cover letter.
