How to Run Two or More Computers Off of One DSL Modem

How to Run Two or More Computers Off of One DSL Modem thumbnail
Connect multiple computers to the Internet.

A DSL Internet modem connects to computers through an Ethernet based cable connection. Most DSL modems have multiple outputs (usually four), allowing several computers to connect to the Internet at the same time. The only downfall to connecting multiple computers at the same time is the DSL modem's connection speed stays the same, so when multiple computers use the same Internet connection the overall connection speed for each computer is reduced.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect an Ethernet cable into the wall Internet port, then insert the opposite end of the cable into the "WAN" port on the DSL modem.

    • 2

Insert a second Ethernet cable into the first "Out" port on the DSL modem. Plug the opposite end of the cable into the "WAN" port of the first computer.

    • 3

Repeat the connection process with all of the computers you want to connect to the DSL modem. A green light appears next to the Ethernet cables on the DSL modem, signifying the connection is secure.

    • 4

Open the Internet browser on any of the connected computers to access the Internet.

My modem only has one ethernet port. I would like to connect multiple devices to the internet. Will i require a router or can u advise something else? Will a router allow for more efficient use than say a 4 port modem which u say above slows the connection for each device? please advise Thanks Adam
