So you've recently tried to remove Backup Exec System Recovery with Windows' Add/Remove application, and you quickly found out that it isn't possible. You'll need to remove it manually, and fortunately it's pretty simple to do. By following a few simple steps, soon Backup Exec System Recovery will be a thing of the past on your computer.

Instructions

      Make a copy of the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec\Licenses. Send this file to an alternate directory, such as C:\Windows or C:\MyDocuments.

      Go to the "Start" menu and select "Run." Type "services.msc" and click "OK." Right-click on "Backup Exec System Recovery" and click "Stop."

      Press "Ctrl" + "Shift" + "Esc" to open the Task Manager. Click the "Processes" tab, right-click on "VProTray.exe" and click "End Process." Close the Task Manger.

      Download and install a computer cleaning program (see Resources section).

      Open the cleaning program, highlight "Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery" and click "Remove." Close the computer cleaning program.

      Click "Start," click "Run," type "regedit" and click "OK" to open the Registry Editor. Remove all of these files associated with Backup Exec:

      1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Backup
      Exec System Recovery
      2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec System
      Recovery
      3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current
      Version\Installer\User Data\S-1-5-
      18\Products\CD339D1422F576B4588A92CCF2A07A1D
      4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current
      Version\Uninstall\{41D933DC-5F22-4B67-85A8-29CC2F0AA7D1}
      5. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Installer\Products\CD339D1422F576B4588A92
      CCF2A07A1D
      6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Installed Recovery
      Technology

      Close out of the Registry Editor when finished.

      Go to C:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec System Recovery. Delete this file.

      Go to C:\Program Files\CommonFiles\Symantec Shared\Licenses and open the folder. Delete the file for Backup Exec System Recovery. Restart your computer to completely uninstall the program.
