How to Make a Good Snowboard Ramp
In the winter you can almost always find spots where kids are sledding and snowboarding down big snowy hills. Thanks to Olympic gold medalist Shaun White, snowboarding is becoming more popular than ever. Amateur snowboarders can improve their skills greatly if they learn how to make a good snowboard ramp that they can practice on. Whether you're dealing with the good stuff--packing snow--or the light, fluffy powder snow, just about anyone can make a good snowboard ramp.

Locate a spot on the hill where you want your ramp. Put it in the middle if it's a big hill and you want to keep riding after you hit the ramp, or put it right at the bottom if you want to get a bunch of speed and land a big trick.

Shovel snow from surrounding areas into a large pile, packing it down after every three to four scoops. Continue shoveling until you reach your desired ramp size.

Add snow to the bottom of the front of the pile to enhance the incline. Pack the entire ramp down by smacking it with the bottom of your shovel. Make your snowboard ramp a straight 45-degree angle if you want to go far; give it a lip if you want to go high.

Create a lane for your snowboard onto the ramp using the bottom of your shovel. Drag the shovel down from the top of the ramp to the bottom to make a lane. Continue dragging the shovel behind you as you walk up the hill to make sure you hit the ramp when you're snowboarding back down.

Pick a spot on the hill for your snowboard ramp, either in the middle or at the bottom.

Place a plastic kicker ramp in your spot and begin shoveling snow from surrounding areas, completely covering it about 3 to 6 inches deep. Pack the snow down with the bottom of your shovel as much as possible between scoops.

Shape your ramp using the bottom of your shovel. Shape it at a 45-degree angle for a kicker ramp or give it a curvaceous form to be used as a launch ramp.

Create a lane by dragging your shovel down the middle of your snowboard ramp and all the way up the hill behind you.

Tips & Warnings
You can use a plastic kicker ramp for packing snow as well for extra support, but in most cases it's not necessary.
Shovel the snow for the ramp from the places where you won't be riding your snowboard.
Avoid using wooden ramps as they lose durability when buried in the snow.
Always wear a helmet when snowboarding.
