Windows Live Messenger is Microsoft's instant-messaging service, which you can use to chat with other Messenger users on the Internet. To accomplish this task, you must download and install the Live Messenger software (available by using the link in the "Resources" section of this article) and be connected with other Messenger users, who are known as "Contacts."

Instructions

      Open the Windows Live Messenger software by clicking the "Start" button in the lower left corner of your desktop, choosing "All Programs" and selecting "Windows Live Messenger" from the list.

      Enter your user name and password in the provided text fields and hit "Enter."

      Select an online contact in the list that appears by double-clicking the user's name.

      In the window that appears, enter your message in the lower text field. Click "Enter" to send the message when you are done; you will see the message appear in the top field on the window.

Tips & Warnings

  • The other user's messages will appear in the same window as your original message when they respond.

  • To add a contact, click "Add Contact" in the main Messenger window, then follow the prompts to search for and add a Messenger buddy.
