How Do I Check for a Registered Agent?

How Do I Check for a Registered Agent? thumbnail
A company's registered agent can be found online.

A registered agent (also know as a statutory agent or resident agent) is a designated individual in a corporation or company who's responsible for sending and receiving official documents, particularly legal pleadings and correspondence on behalf of the company or corporation. A registered agent may have an address at the corporate office or a subsidiary or maintain his own office (a registered agent is typically the attorney that represents the company or corporation). Registered agents can usually be found through the Division of Corporations in the state in which the corporation is headquartered.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the state in which the company's corporate office is located. Every corporation or company is required by the state in which it's chartered to provide information about its legal structure (i.e., whether it's a corporation, limited liability company or limited liability partnership), officers and executives (e.g., CEO, CFO, COO, registered agent) and purpose (what type of services or products the company offers).

To find a company's registered agent, visit the company's website: Companies often list contact information for their corporate headquarters; phone the corporate headquarters and ask to speak with the human resources department.

    • 2

Visit the state's Division of Corporations or Secretary of State's website. The state in which the company is headquartered will have an official Secretary of State or Division of Corporations website that will have specific information about the company, including the company's registered agent. The website will return a company's registered agent's name and contact information---this information is often an address, but it also may include a phone number and email address.

    • 3

Verify the registered agent still works for the company. Using the information provided by the state's official website, write, phone or email the registered agent. Companies in all states are required to keep their corporate information accurate and up to date, but if a change in the status of the registered agent has been filed by the company, it may not be available to the public right away.
