How to Troubleshoot a Dometic Royale Refrigerator

Jamie Lisse

Dometic Royale refrigerators are units that are designed for use in RVs and campers. These refrigerators come in a variety of sizes, depending on the size of the kitchen in your camper or RV. Troubleshooting is the same basic process for any model of Dometic Royale refrigerator. You may need to try each troubleshooting option separately, and hook the refrigerator back up to test it out after each attempt. If you have no luck on your own, you can take the RV to your local RV store to have the unit looked at by a service professional.

  1. Disconnect the power from your refrigerator before attempting to troubleshoot it.

  2. Shut off the gas supply and disconnect the gas from the refrigerator so you can slide it out for troubleshooting.

  3. Inspect the back area of the refrigerator to make sure the lower and upper vents are free from debris. If you see any obstructions such as a bird's nest, leaves or spider webs on the back of the refrigerator, you should use a clean cloth to wipe it down and remove any debris. The debris can clog the vents or jets on the unit and restrict airflow.

  4. Use a soft-bristle brush to clean off the coils on the back of the refrigerator. Dirty coils can result in the refrigerator not cooling properly.

  5. Defrost the unit if you are experiencing heavy frost buildup on the refrigerator.

  6. Examine the thermostat to make sure the setting has not been changed if you are experiencing a too hot or too cold unit.

  7. Remove the power module cover on the lower back of the unit to access the fuse area. Snap out the fuse and replace it with a new one if you are having problems powering on the unit. Replace the cover once you have replaced the fuse.

  8. Clean the burner with a soft-bristle brush to remove any soot. Use a can of compressed air to blow away the soot around the burner, as well as the flue tube, which is where the soot comes from. This may solve any strange odors or fumes you may be experiencing. If not, you will need to replace the burner.
