How to Obtain a Real Estate License in Massachusetts

Selling real estate in Massachusetts requires a license.

Massachusetts has two levels of real estate licensing, salesperson and broker. Anyone wishing to sell real estate in Massachusetts must have at least a salesperson license. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age to apply for the salesperson license. Real estate salespeople can apply for a broker license after obtaining the required experience and additional education beyond what is required for a salesperson license. Individuals with valid real estate licenses from other states can obtain a Massachusetts license through a reciprocity agreement.

1. Locate an authorized real estate school. A list of authorized schools is available on the consumer affairs and business regulation website for Massachusetts. Complete and pass 24 hours of education at one of the approved schools.

2. Review the guidebook provided by the school upon completion of the program. The book contains information on how to register for the exam. The book also contains verification of completion of the required coursework. Bring the guidebook with you when you are tested.

3. Schedule, take and pass the examination. Licensure is provided at the test center.
