How to Share Files Between Computers on a Home Network

Save

Home computer systems that are on a network have the ability to share files between each other. This is facilitated by the router, which connects the computers, and the operating systems, which allow the computers to connect and transfer files back and forth.

Things You'll Need

  • Two or more computers connected via a router
  • Log into the computer that you want to share files from. Navigate to the folder you wish to share, right-click the folder, and click "Sharing and Security..."

  • Click on the "Share this folder on the network" check box, and then check the "Allow network users to change my files" box if you want other people on your network to be able to modify the files in the shared folder.

  • Click on the "OK" button. Right-click on the "My Computer" icon on your Windows Desktop, click on the tab marked "Computer Name," and then write down the name of the computer.

  • Log into another computer on your home network. Open Windows Explorer, and then click on "Network," "Entire Network," and then on "Windows Network."

  • Double-click on the computer name that is sharing the files (the same name you retrieved in Step 3). The shared folder is now displayed, and the files within it can be accessed.
