Being able to change the product key of a Windows operating system is important if you were sold a pirated copy. The product key in Windows operating systems is the link between the system and your computer, and it allows you to download updates and improvements. Booting in safe mode will allow you to change the product key without having to reinstall your operating system and everything on it.
Things You'll Need
- New product key
Start your computer. Press the “F8” key just after the manufacturer's logo appears on the screen and before the Windows logo appears.
Select “Safe mode with networking” using the arrow keys and press “Enter.”
Go to the “Start” menu and type “%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /A” in the “Run” or “Search Programs and Files” field (without the quotes). Press “Enter.”
Enter your legal name and the name you want your computer to have and press “Next.” Your name needs to be entered because the license is tied to the computer hardware as well as your name.
Enter the new product key that was either provided to you by your system administrator or written on the Microsoft license pack you purchased. The computer will connect to the internet to check the key authenticity in order to complete the activation process. Close the wizard.
