Making fake snow out of baking soda is an easy and cheap way to add a touch of winter to anything. Whether it be making snow bases to miniature figures, adding snow to a Christmas village, putting snow on train tracks or creating snow for a school project, you'll be suprised at how easy it is. Just mix baking soda, white glue and joint compound, and within 10 minutes, you will be ready to decorate.
Things You'll Need
- Equal Part Joint Compound and White Glue.
- Baking Soda equal to the total of Joint Compound plus the White Glue.
How to Make Fake Snow With Baking Soda
Using a disposable bowl or paper plate, add equal parts of joint compound and white glue. Add baking soda that is equal to the total of the joint compound and the white glue.
Mix the baking soda, joint compound and white glue combination. When the mixture is fully mixed, it should have a toothpaste consistency. If the mixture is too thin and runny, add more baking soda until you have a toothpaste consistency. If the mixture is too thick, add a small amount of glue. If it continues to be thick, slowly add a small amount of water into the mix until the right consistency is achieved.
Use a plastic butter knife or paint brush and decorate with the snow mixture. Decorate within 30 minutes of achieving toothpaste consistency. The glue and joint compound will dry within 30 minutes. If a more powdery look is desired, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda or powder on top of the fake snow, allowing it to dry on top of the snow mixture.
Tips & Warnings
- Baking soda will absorb moisture over a period of time and eventually discolor, becoming yellow.
- If you use very old baking soda, the baking soda can take on a pinkish color over time.
