How to Remove Fuel Lines From the Fuel Filter on 2000 KIA Sportage

Save

The fuel filter on the 2000 KIA Sportage is a in-line fuel filter. The in-line fuel filter traps sediments from the fuel inside the filter and keeps them out of the engine. The gas leaves the gas tank, enters the fuel lines and then the fuel filter. The filter traps the sediments and releases the fuel back into the fuel lines, which then travels into the fuel injectors and the engine.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel catch pan
  • Fuel line quick-disconnect tool
  • New fuel filter (optional)
  • Park the 2000 KIA Sportage on level ground and set the emergency brake. Then open the hood.

  • Remove the gas cap from the gas tank to release the gas pressure from the fuel filter.

  • Locate the fuel filter under the hood directly behind the battery. The fuel filter will be a black, round canister with two fuel lines coming out of it. One fuel line comes out of the bottom and one fuel line comes out of the top. These two fuel lines will have to be removed from the fuel filter with a fuel line quick-disconnect tool.

  • Slide the fuel catch pan underneath the 2000 KIA Sportage directly under the fuel filter to catch the small amount of excess fuel that will drain from the fuel lines.

  • Slide the round end of the fuel line quick-disconnect tool into the end of the bottom fuel line. Push the tool inward until you feel the bottom fuel line unlock from the fuel filter. Then pull the bottom fuel line off the fuel filter.

  • Slide the round end of the tool inside of the top end of the fuel line. Push the tool inward until it unlocks from the fuel filter and pull the fuel line off the fuel filter. If you're going to replace the fuel filter, continue to Step 7 now that the fuel lines have been removed.

  • Slide the round fuel filter out of the bracket and discard the fuel filter into the catch pan. Slide the new fuel filter into the bracket. Make sure that the flow arrow that is stamped on the side of the fuel filter is pointing upward.

  • Slide the bottom fuel line onto the bottom fuel-filter port until it locks in place. Then pull back on the fuel line to ensure that the fuel line is locked onto the fuel filter. Slide the top fuel line onto the top fuel-filter port until it locks in place. Pull back on the fuel line to ensure that it is also locked on. Screw the gas cap back onto the gas tank.

  • Turn the ignition on and off three times to prime the fuel filter with gas. Then crank the engine and inspect the fuel filter and fuel lines for leaks while the engine is running. Turn the engine off and close the hood.

Tips & Warnings

  • The flow arrow that is stamped on the side of the fuel filter represents the flow of the fuel from the gas tank to the engine. The bottom fuel line comes from the gas tank and the top fuel line goes to the engine. Thus, the flow arrow should be pointing upward.
  • Never smoke around gas.
  • Always wear safety glasses around gas.
