Understand place value in decimals

In math, you will have to learn and understand decimals. Learning about decimals involves understanding about place value. Place value represents each number's place in a decimal. Once you can identify the places of decimals, you can learn how to round, add, multiply and divide decimals. You also can solve mathematical problems involving money. A value chart can guide in placing and identify decimal values. With the chart naming the decimal places, you will also be able to write out decimals in words.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a simple value chart. Draw five columns, add a decimal point in the fifth column and draw six more columns. Draw a horizontal line toward the bottom of the chart, about 3 inches from the end of the paper.

    • 2

Write a number that fills in all the columns of the value chart. This is a 10-digit number with a decimal point at the midpoint of the number. For example, you would write 1,127.536908.

    • 3

Label the whole place number values. These are located on the left side of the decimal on the value chart. The number right next to the decimal place should be the "ones" place. Continue towards the left hand side of the chart by labeling the "tens," "hundreds" and "thousands" place.

    • 4

Label the decimal place values. You will have blank columns to the right of the decimal place. The number to the right of the decimal place would be the "tenths" place. Continue on to the right of the columns by labeling the "hundredths," "thousandths," "ten-thousandths," "hundred thousandths" and "millionths" places.

    • 5

Identify each of the numbers you've written on the chart. Study their place values on the chart.

    • 6

Practice with other decimal numbers. Erase the number you previously written in and write in a new number. Identify their place values on the chart.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test yourself on place value. Try to memorize the chart and see if you can recognize the place value of numbers in decimals.
