New Jersey has its own set of specific laws regarding riding motor scooters. When riding in the Garden State it's important to understand the general traffic laws which are in place also. Out of the entire USA, New Jersey has the most population density per square mile. This means one must be very careful riding a scooter on the road. Vespa is an Italian manufacturer of scooters. A Vespa scooter can go anywhere from 35mph to over 100 mph and gets anywhere from 50 miles per gallon to 90 miles per gallon.

      Get a motorcycle license and proper documentation

      Obtain a New Jersey motorcycle license by passing a written test and a riding test at a NJ DMV testing center. Obtain insurance with a motorcycle insurance company. Register and get your license plates for your Vespa with the New Jersey DMV. You will need to show proof of insurance, title and pay a registration fee. You will also need either a manufacturer's certificate of origin, New Jersey out of state title or registration and a notarized bill of sale from the previous owner with vehicle description and sale price.

      Have your Vespa scooter inspected at a New Jersey DMV (Division of Motor Vehicles) inspection station. Bring your valid motorcycle license. Wear an approved non-reflective helmet, with four inches of reflective tape on each side and wear an approved set of goggles or face shield, if the scooter is not equipped with an approved wind screen
