How to Get a New SSN

Although the U.S. Social Security Administration normally does not issue new Social Security numbers, you may be able to apply for one if you are the victim of domestic violence or identity theft. For domestic abuse, you must show proof that your life is endangered, you are being harassed or that you are abused. In cases of identity theft, you must have done everything possible to fix the problem caused by the misuse and still have problems with someone using your Social Security number.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply in person at a Social Security office where they will help you fill out form SS-5 to request a new Social Security card and the forms required to state why you need a new number.

    • 2

Present documentation of harassment and abuse for victims of domestic violence or evidence of misuse of your stolen Social Security number.

    • 3

Bring your original birth certificate as proof of your age. If your birth certificate is unobtainable, present your passport or a document issued by the Department of Homeland Security.

    • 4

Provide proof of U.S. citizenship by showing your original birth certificate, U.S. consular report of birth, a U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization or a Certificate of citizenship. If you are not a citizen, you must provide documents proving your U.S. immigration status.

    • 5

Show proof of identity in the form of a driver's license, state identification card or a passport. If you do not have any of these documents you can present proof of identity in the form of an employee identification card, school identification card, military identification card, marriage document, health insurance card other than Medicare, an adoption decree or life insurance policy. If not a U.S. citizen, you will need to show your U.S. immigration documents.

    • 6

Bring evidence of legal name change if you are a victim of domestic abuse and have had your name changed.

    • 7

Show original legal documents if you are a victim of abuse, have custody of children and wish to have their Social Security numbers changed. You also must present proof of their ages, identities and citizenship status.

Tips & Warnings

  • To avoid identity theft, keep your card and documents showing your Social Security number in a safe place.

  • Changing your Social Security number may have an impact on your credit, medical and employment history.

  • You cannot get a new Social Security number if you want to avoid the consequences of bankruptcy, if there is no evidence of someone using your stolen number or if you are trying to avoid the law or your legal responsibilities.
