How to Build a Frame for a Workbench

How to Build a Frame for a Workbench thumbnail
Pine is used in many construction applications.

Workbenches require a sturdy frame that can handle an abundance of abuse over time. Often, workbenches are built with a solid top and a not-so-sturdy frame. Other times, workbench tops are salvaged while the old frames are discarded. Either way, building your own sturdy workbench frame will result in a long-lasting bench. Construction lumber is most commonly used for workbenches. It is generally inexpensive and easy to work with. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay your 31-inch boards horizontal, parallel and 23 inches apart. Lay a 30-inch board perpendicularly over the left side of both 31-inch boards, so the 30-inch edge is flush with the 4-by-4 ends. Screw another 30-inch board to the 31-inch boards so it is parallel with the first 30-inch board, and 15 inches away. Repeat this process with the other two 30-inch boards, and 31-inch boards. Use a screw gun

    • 2

Lift both sets of 4-by-4 boards upright, so the 30-inch boards that are flush with the 4-by-4 ends are on top. The 30-inch boards should be on the outside of the 31-inch boards, parallel, and 37-inches apart. Screw your 40-inch boards to the ends of the 30-inch boards. There should be two 40-inch boards on each side, spaced just like the 30-inch boards. This is the skeleton of your workbench frame.

    • 3

Lay your 30-by-30-inch plywood over the bottom 40-inch pieces of plywood so the edges on both sides are flush. Screw the plywood to the 40-inch boards. This is a shelf for your workbench

    • 4

Lay your 30-by-40-inch piece of plywood over the top of your workbench, and screw it to the 4-by-4 boards.

    • 5

Lay your workbench top on top of the ½-inch plywood, and screw through the plywood into the top to complete your workbench.
