How to Recover Digital Image Photos

How to Recover Digital Image Photos thumbnail
When you delete an image, it remains hidden on your computer until it is overwritten.

Deleted image files can lead to regret, as you may never see them again. However, recovery is possible because the deleted image temporarily remains on your hard drive, though hidden. If you have an image you wish to recover, specially developed software can help recover deleted files, but it does not work 100 percent of the time. The longer an image has been deleted, the less likely you'll be able to recover it. Every time you save a file, install a program or browse the web, there's a chance that your image will be overwritten and truly lost. The best way to keep a picture is to never delete it, but if it has been deleted, you have a chance of getting it back.

Run your file recovery program. If you do not already have one, you can download and install many free versions, including Restoration, Recuva, and Avira. If possible, do not download and install these programs onto the hard drive from which you deleted your image. Use a separate computer and install the program onto a flash drive. This extra precaution will prevent your computer from overwriting your deleted image file with the file recovery software itself.

Click the "Scan" button and select the hard drive from which you deleted your image. If you're unsure which hard drive it was on, you can select all of your hard drives. This will take longer, but it will improve the odds of finding your deleted image. When the scan is complete, it will present you with a list of all the files that have been deleted from your computer, yet remain on the hard drive.

Browse through the deleted files until you find your image. Click the box next to its name and then click "Recover." Your image has now been restored to your hard drive. However, if it was in poor condition, you might not be able to view it. In addition, if it has been fully overwritten, you won't even find it on the list. Again, the longer a file has been deleted from your hard drive, the less likely you'll be able to recover it.
